ABSTRACT

Childbirth is an experience in a woman' s life that holds the power to transform her forever. The objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of Shiatsu massage upon rst stage Labour pain among the parturient mothers. In this pre-test, post-test experimental study, 60 parturient mothers were selected by simple random sampling technique among which 30 were assigned to the control group and 30 mothers to the experimental group. The labour pain level was assessed by the visual pain analogue scale, and foeto maternal parameters using modi- ed WHO partograph before and after intervention for both control and experimental group of parturient mothers. The experimental group was provided with Shiatsu massage on UB30 of the sacro-meridian region for 10 minutes for every two hours along with the routine care and the control group was treated only with the routine care during the labour process. The results showed a signi cant difference in after therapy pain score, at p'lt;0.001 between the control and experimental group. The foeto maternal parameters like foetal heart rate, uterine contraction and cervical dilatation was stable throughout the labour process. The Shiatsu massage was effective in reducing the level of labour pain perception. The management of labour pain is a primary responsibility of the nurse. Midwives can be empowered to provide Shiatsu massage as non-pharmacological pain management during childbirth.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Pain and fatigue are common symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS). Shiatsu, a technique that uses the pressure of fingers, associated with manual therapy, exercises and stretching can be used to control these symptoms. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Shiatsu associated with physical therapy on pain and fatigue on people with MS. Methods: Randomized clinical trial with people diagnosed with MS divided into two groups: intervention group (IG) - Shiatsu-associated physical therapy (n = 9), and control group (CG, n = 8). Participants were assessed before and after treatment by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Neuropathic Pain Questionnaire (DN4), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), and description of sociodemographic. Results: Seventeen people with MS (9 men) aged 45.18 ± 3.06 years participated in this study. In the total sample, the average of DN4 was 1.65 ± 20.02, VAS was 2.29 ± 2.80, MFIS was 39.47 ± 29.67, and 52.9 % had a score > 38 in the MFIS that corresponds to presence of fatigue. The values pre/post-intervention/grade of p, respectively in the IG were DN4: 2.78 ± 2.16/2.0 ± 2.12/0.432, EVA: 3.22 ± 3.27/0.33 ± 1.00/0.023, total MFIS: 44.44 ± 35.91/35 ± 31.70/0.068. In the CG the values were DN4 : 0.38 ± 0.744/2.25 ± 2.71/0.054, EVA : 1.25 ± 1.83/3.63 ± 2.38/0.043, and MFIS : 33.88 ± 21.68/25.13 ± 24.22/0.379. Conclusion: Shiatsu associated with Physiotherapy was effective in improving pain and fatigue in individuals with MS.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] The increasing number of acupuncture and moxibustion training schools as well as the diversity of new student and patient needs is changing the educational environment of practitioners of Amma massage, acupuncture, and moxibustion. This raises the question whether the present curriculum can meet the challenges presented by these changes. This study presents the findings of a questionnaire survey designed to elucidate basic data relevant to the creation of the ideal curriculum.
[Methods] A questionnaire was sent to a total of 111 schools nationwide, comprising 70 training schools for the visually impaired and 41 vocational schools affiliated with the Society of Oriental Medicine. The staff member responsible for curriculum organization in each school completed the questionnaire.
[Concluding remarks] The response rate was 70.3% (78/111 schools). The questionnaire survey revealed that one group of individuals was responsible for the curriculum. It was also made clear that education was advancing, not by a fundamental curriculum-based teaching system, but by individual teaching staff.
Ensuring future development in the education system for practitioners of Amma massage, acupuncture, and moxibustion will require introducing a core curriculum. Discussion is also necessary.

ABSTRACT

[Objective] We analyzed the transition and state of Japanese 141 colleges, schools and training centers for anma-massage-shiatsu, acupuncture and moxibustion therapists in 2004.
[Methods] We collected a basic data from Japanese 141 colleges, schools and training centers and several sources : a list published by the foundation for the Training and Licensure Examination in Anma-Massage-Shiatsu, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, an investigation of the state of Japanese schools for the visually impaired students, the 10th Anniversary report of Oriental Medicine Colleges Association and school guides of each school. We considered and analysed this basic data.
[Result] Data was collected from 141 different sources : 5 universities and colleges, 61 schools for the visually impaired students, 66 vocational colleges and 9 training centers for the visually impaired students. Most of the schools and training centers for the visually impaired students are public. All colleges for the non-visually impaired students are private. We analysed and verified 3 periods in the history of these institutions of 141 colleges, schools and a training centers. The 1 st period concerns the establishment of schools for the visually impaired students the early 1900's. The 2nd period is concerns the establishment of older vocational colleges after World War II in the 50's. And the 3 rd period is a sudden increase of new vocational colleges following the 1998 Fukuoka district court judgement.
[Conclusion] We analyzed the changes and the situations regarding 141 Japanese colleges, schools and training centers for anma-massage-shiatsu, acupuncture, moxibustion therapists from their foundation to the present. The rapid increase of vocational colleges for acupuncture and moxibustion represents a phenomenon we have never experienced. With this condition, acupuncture and moxibustion markets must expand. In the future Japanese anma-massage-shiatsu, acupuncture and moxibustion education should be researched and hopefully we will benefit from this new situation.
